How to Create a Cloud Account That Will Not Get Flagged
Cloud signups fail more often than people expect, and usually for mundane reasons. What to get right the first time.
A rejected or flagged cloud signup is a frustrating way to start, partly
because the provider rarely tells you which specific thing caused it. The
underlying logic is not mysterious though. Providers are trying to establish
that you are a real, accountable person who is unlikely to use their
infrastructure for abuse, and almost every rejection comes from something that
undermines that.
Get these right before you start
Use details that match each other
The name on the account, the name on the payment card and the billing address
should agree. Mismatches between them are one of the strongest signals a fraud
system looks for, and they are also the easiest thing to get accidentally wrong
by using a personal card on a company account or vice versa.
Use a domain email address if you have one
Free email providers are not banned, but they carry less weight. Hetzner’s
own guidance discourages them explicitly. If you have a domain, an address on it
materially improves how a registration is assessed, because it is evidence of
something that took effort to obtain.
Do not register through a VPN
This one catches a lot of privacy-conscious people by surprise. A VPN makes
geographic assessment harder, which pushes a borderline registration towards
manual review or rejection. Hetzner asks directly that you avoid VPNs during
registration. Turn it off for the signup, then turn it back on.
Expect a card, even for free usage
Nine of the ten platforms covered on this site require a payment method even
for free tiers, because the card is the identity check rather than a charge. A
small authorisation may appear and be refunded. Oracle’s is a single unit of
currency, refunded immediately.
Be consistent about location
A registration with a billing address in one country, an IP address in
another and a phone number from a third is a pattern fraud systems are
specifically built to notice. If your genuine situation looks like that, expect
manual verification and have documents ready rather than being surprised.
What the checks are actually for
It helps to know what the provider is worried about, because then the
requirements stop feeling arbitrary. Cloud platforms have dealt with trial
credits used for crypto mining, instances used to send spam, and infrastructure
used to attack other systems. The verification step exists to make that
expensive. It also protects you, because it establishes a provable link between
you and the account, which is what gives you support access and recourse later.
The specific requirements for each platform are set out in the
verification
comparison.
If you are asked for more
Being asked to verify is not a rejection. Two routes are common: a copy of a
government-issued identity document, or an advance payment made with a card in
your own name. Hetzner offers both. Supply whichever is easier and the account
usually proceeds normally.
Respond promptly, supply exactly what was asked for, and send clear images if
documents are involved. Most verification requests resolve in a day or two.
The approaches that do not work
Creating a second account to get another free trial is explicitly against the
terms of most platforms and is detected more reliably than people assume.
Kamatera limits each customer to one account and one trial and is built to spot
duplicates. Oracle monitors for multiple accounts from the same address and
mismatched geography.
Buying a pre-verified account does not solve the problem either. It moves the
account onto someone else’s identity, which means every login creates a pattern
that does not match the original registration, and suspension follows. The
reasoning is in
why purchased accounts get
suspended.
A short pre-flight list
- VPN off.
- Email address on your own domain, if you have one.
- Name, address and card all matching.
- Phone number reachable for an SMS code.
- Card in your own name, with a small authorisation expected.
- Identity document to hand, in case it is requested.
Done this way, a signup usually completes in a few minutes. The time cost of
getting it right once is considerably lower than the time cost of a rejection
and an appeal.
